Basic First Aid Tips for Babies and Toddlers

medAs a parent, it’s really imperative to learn basic First Aid. We all know how much it hurts (the parents…emotionally mostly) if our babies take a fall. If your little bub has started achieving developmental milestones like crawling, rolling, pulling themselves up, reaching out etc, then this post is very important for you. Also a good read for those parents whose children are generally known as ‘calamity Janes’ in the playground 😀

The key in most injuries is: DO NOT PANIC. Guess the number of times this rule is broken each time calamity Jane struck our house? Answer: Every. Bleddy. Time. Daddy Dear hits panic button anytime our baby starts bawling after getting hurt. His pulse racing, face and palms sweating, eyes glazed and staring into oblivion (daddy’s, not the baby).

I agree it gives us all a heartattack, but we have to start by assessing how bad the injury is. In most falls and the accompanying screaming, the baby cries mostly because he is startled and shocked. As a parent or a witness to the incident, your instinct will guide you into understanding the severity of the situation. Comforting the baby and a quick physical evaluation of the child will help you in deciphering if a trip to the Hospital, or a call to the Doctor is required.

Incase of any severe fall or head injury, it’s crucial to closely monitor the baby for the next 24 hours. A hospital visit is REQUIRED if ANY (one or more) of the following are observed:

  • Unconscious or fainted after injury
  • Drowsiness or alteration in consciousness
  • Severe and persistent headache (baby will try and shake head whilst also crying)
  • Vomiting (different from a regular baby spitup)
  • Dizziness / double or blurred vision (baby will show peculiar eye movement)
  • One pupil (black part of the eye) visibly larger than the other
  • Neck stiffness
  • Convulsions or fits
  • Strange behavior (baby is less active/alert)
  • Very slow and rapid pulse
  • Any unusual breathing pattern

What to do in case of nose/ear/wound bleed following an injury?

Swelling / Bleeding from Nose or Ears

Apply an ice pack immediately. Area for application needs to be the nose & cheeks or bridge of nose. You can use the frozen vegetable packets from your freezer, but ensure that anything which you apply, needs to be covered in a cloth or towel and NOT touching the skin directly.

  • DO NOT block the nose or ears, let it drain.
  • DO NOT press down on the wound if you suspect a skull fracture.
  • Arrange to go to the hospital for further treatment.

Bleeding from the wound

It’s important to stop the bleeding. You can do so by applying direct pressure.

  • However DO NOT press down on the wound if you suspect a skull fracture.
  • Arrange to go to the hospital for further treatment.

In most of the open wounds, it is advisable not to attempt at cleaning the wound as it may trigger further bleeding. Keep it covered with a sterile bandage. If one gets soaked, apply another one on top and so forth.

If you do suspect a skull fracture, or an injury to the spine or neck after a fall, try to keep your baby calm and still. By moving them you may end up causing more harm. Call your local emergency number immediately for medical support at the scene of the fall.

According to Redcross “once you have treated the swelling by applying something cold to the baby or child’s head injury, and if they are not displaying signs of a serious head injury, you could let them sleep. Ensure you check on them regularly.” You can imagine how shaken the baby must also be.

It does not mean each bump and fall requires a trip to panic room. As a parent, you will ‘know’ which injuries require immediate medical assistance. So follow your instinct. No one knows your baby more than you. When in doubt, DO call the doctor. Following any head injury remember… ‘Evaluate with your head and not your heart’

End of the day, the best way to help your baby is to make their environment safer. Towards lesser injuries and more milestones 🙂

And let us know if you have any tips. We would know to have them included in the post. Take care. Stay safe 🙂

I have to admit it, that every day I spend a good amount of time, watching YouTube videos, a lot of them actually. And I have been doing this for over two years now. And over time I have developed such amazing connect with these lovely vloggers and their channels that I thought it would be nice to share with you all and tell you how amazing they are.

I mostly follow a bunch of mommy/parenting channels and a few makeup/beauty channels, these are the subjects I have always held my attention. And in this post I will talk about six of my favourite and best YouTube Channels you should probably not miss.

1.  What’s Up Mom’s:

The Mommy Blog

This is probably the first on my list, for two reasons. This was the first YouTube channel that I ever started following. Second, I love the rapport between these young moms and their dedication to work. This channel was started by Elle, a mom of two. Now it’s a group of three moms who make it all happen. Meg shares kitchen tips, easy recipes. Brooke’s beautiful DIY projects and Elle does vlogs and tips videos. You should check out Elle’s Gangnam Style Parody. Their first video I ever watched, I remember husband showed it to me and we  both had a good laugh. That’s when I started following this channel.

2.  I’m A Mommy:

This amazing channel is by Michelle, a mother to 2 toddlers and a newborn. I have been following her for a long time now. And the reason I love her channel is because she’s so real and just herself. She’s one super mom I completely adore. Plus she always patient with answering all the questions posted by her followers (me included 😉 ). I love her hauls and monthly favourites videos most.

3.  It’s Judy’s Life:

Judy is a mom to a pre-schooler and twin girls. I started following her last year and have completely fallen in love with her vlogs. The way Benji, her husband is always helping her film the videos and backing her up every time/place is so remarkable. I mean we all need a strong support system. Don’t we?

4.  I Love Being a Mommy:

Elizabeth Rebecca, a sweet mom to two kids started this channel about a year ago. And I have started following her recently. I love the way she making her videos. They are just so beautiful to watch. Like really beautiful. I have to admit that I keep watching her videos over and over again just because I love all those subtle colours and music in her videos.

5.  Amanda Muse:

Amanda, is also a mother of two and a beauty enthusiast. I love her vlogs for her simplicity and uniqueness. I’m not comparing here. But then it’s so refreshing to find something new and exciting every time you watch her vlogs. Plus she’s such an energetic mother.

6.  Daily Bumps

This is another channel I have started following recently. Daily Bumps is by Missy and Bryan, parents to a toddler and expecting their second child very soon. I love how lively their vlogs are. And the constant connect between this vlogy couple. They put up one video every single day, which itself says a lot about their teamwork and dedication.

It’s so inspiring to see how all these wonderful moms and dads manage YouTube, rare kids and still have a life. I’m completely addicted to these vlog channels and can’t wait to see their next videos.

And if you are like me and would love to watch some wonderful parenting vlogs every day/week, then go on and subscribe to these channels. And let me know your favourite mommy YouTube channel. I would love to subscribe to them 🙂

* This list is purely based on my personal preference and is not a proven one. I was not paid to do this post.

Reason I chose to be stay at home MOM

babythemommyblog (2)
There he was sleeping peacefully my little Angel…I just Love love my little baby 🙂 Isn’t he the most precious gift I can ever ask for in my life?!! Isn’t his smile makes everything possible in the World ?!! Isn’t he the best ??!! isn’t he my reason to love my self and love everyone around him ???!!
My thoughts started flowing endlessly . There was no full stop, comma or even exclamation mark !! As if I couldn’t swallow anything..Only thing was questions and questions in my mind and heart??????
I was on maternity leave and was going to start work in two months time. Those two months now seemed to be such a short period to me on that long night.. I just couldn’t sleep and kept thinking and fighting with my own load of questions, which had no answer from my side.
Till that time I was so much prepared that I was going to start working and look after my boy too. Now it seemed like some impossible task. Then I got what I like to call as answer of my never ending questions.
YES.. I would love to be STAY AT HOME MOM 🙂 or home maker or house wife whichever name we like to call it and happily look after my little bundle of joy. And here are the reasons I chose to be stay at home Mom.

1. To be able to breastfeed:

I exclusively breastfed my boy for the first six months and started baby led weaning after six months. I wanted to continue feeding him on demand. Of course I could have pumped it and someone could have fed him while would work but I did not want to miss the special time we both spent with each other. It’s so priceless and precious.

2. To never miss a milestone:

I never want to  miss any of his milestone, it’s something I never knew I will be so keen of. But the joy to see my son achieving all his milestones, is just unbelievable. I had always visioned him to start walking and come to me with a big smile on his face! I’m still waiting for that day to come. Keeping my fingers crossed!

3.  For those cute baby things:

Is it only me who just loves baby fragrance? I have always loved how my boy smells! His hair smells, his tiny face, little hands, everything smells just so awesome. I didn’t want to miss those morning cuddles and those lovely hugs from him.

4.  To live the moment:

To live the moment, this is something he has taught me. He is so full of energy, and always ready to learn new things even if he fails so at it, in the beginning. His love for me is so pure and unconditional. Children teach us so much about life. How could I just miss those beautiful years of our lives?

5.  To be there for my child: babythemommyblog

Above all, my child always wanted me, his mom to nourish him. To be with him, spend time with him doing silly yet fun things. He wanted to sleep with him, snuggle him, feed him. His life revolves around me and my life around him.
So I wanted to make these first few years, the most precious ones of our life. I knew these initial years are going to work towards building up strong foundation for his future. Every one in the world needs someone who loves them unconditional – he is sleeping peacefully next to me. He who heard my heart beating when he was in my womb. He who loves me. He who chose me to be his mum.
I chose to stay with him. To be his MOM!

4 Tips To Keep You Kids Hydrated In Summer

hydration_kids_india

Summer is one of the favourite seasons for almost every kid. With a lot of outdoor activity happening around this time of year, mostly under the scorching sun. And the temperature can be anywhere between 35 degrees to 41 degree Celsius.

So it’s very important to see that our kids stay hydrated. As proportionately, children have more body fluids than adults and also they can get dehydrated faster than adults.

And these lost fluids need to be replaced immediately in order to stay healthy. And sometimes keeping young children hydrated can be very challenging from parents.

Here are some suggestions that may help you in keeping your little one healthy and hydrated this summer.

1.  Drink mostly water:

Yes water is the best fluid for you and your kids. Let them have their sippers and bottle close enough for them to grab it on their own, as and when they want to. Remember when a child asks for water, you should know that dehydration has already begun.

And if they does not want water, diluted fruit juice also is fine but not good for teeth so it’s goes best with meals.

2.  Serve milk and yogurt for breakfast:

Milk and yogurt are not just rich in calcium but they are also two best ways to provide your kids the fluids that they need. If you prefer to not serve cow’s milk, homemade almond milk is great alternative.

Yogurt with honey makes a wonderful snack for kids for hot summer mornings.

3.  Keep fruits handy:

Whole fruits are not just loaded with mineral, fiber and vitamins. They also have plenty of water in them. Fruits like oranges, grapes, watermelons, as well as vegetables like cucumbers and tomatoes are excellent sources of water.

So, if your kids are interested in having a snack, how about serving them slices of tomatoes or a bowl of grapes.

4.  Make Popsicle:

Although fruit juices mainly contain loads of sugar and carbs, eating fruit in its natural state is beneficial to ensure your kid stays hydrated. But who doesn’t like popsicles?? Use juices with minimal sugar. Remember not to use sugar-free, those are not very good for health.

Making popsicles be as simple as just pouring some juice into a plastic popsicles molds and popping them into the freezer. You can also freeze yogurt, diced fruits with some lime juice poured over. If you don’t have popsicle molds, use ice-tray. Just get a little creative there! 😉

Have a safe and healthy summers!

Mommy Mania

I like being a mom. I actually love it. I love the fact that I’m a mom to two charismatic little ladies is just too over-whelming. I read a lot of books, magazines, blogs that are of moms, by moms and for moms, which I absolutely love doing. And I’m always looking at other mothers and their perspectives of bring up their lovely kids. I try taking bits of inspirations and learn a thing or too, from each of them. But does that make me look superficial?? Hmm..May be it does.

But do I really care? NO! And let me tell you why!

1) I’m a mom. I completely and fully love the profession I’m into. And I very well know that I’m never going to get paid for getting up with those extra little humans in my bed.

2) I love dressing them up according to my fashion ‘sense’. I love giggling with them at the grocery store. I enjoy strolling with them through the parks. More over I love putting together all my ramblings of thoughts only to make them feel happy and nurtured.

3) Despite what some people have told me, it shows that I pay attention to every little thing that’s related to my children. Clothes, books, shows, outings, foods, toys that I think of, every other moment.

4) I’m happy and self-expressive which is the reason I’m here to tell the world that I really love what I am, a MOM.

5) All the more, it makes me feel super-good and really, do I even need any better reason??

What are some of the reasons you enjoy motherhood? Let me know in the comments section below.

And yeah Happy Mom-ing Ladies!!

We ❤ you!

20140511-163248.jpg

Three years ago, around this time, we discovered we were going to have you.

You, our First. The very first addition to our little family.

You gave us the true meaning of realization, discovery and enthusiasm.

You gave me those one-of-a-kind feelings of carrying you, so close to me that I could feel every moment of yours.

You made your papa go crazy-pants noticing you move inside me.

And then one super pleasant day, you made your awesomely grand debut.

You taught us how to hold such a teeny-tiny baby for the first time.

You taught me how to feed, snuggle and comfort a newborn.

You gave us some countless ‘stay-up-with-me-all-the-while’ nights.

You brought in all the happiness and blessings that we always waited for.

We brought you home all wrapped up in our arms, safe and sound. You taught was how to wrap a little baby and welcome her home.

You have so many questions to ask us about every other thing you come across. You taught us to be patient with answering all those never ending ones.

Your papa and I spend hours together snuggling and cuddling  you, laughing and rolling with you every day, and every time we look at each other, we silently realize how blessed we are to have you around. You are a sweet little blessing.

Your cute tiny hands, feet and face taught us to appreciate God and all His amazing bounties and blessing upon us. You are an angel.

You love throwing tantrums and all those ‘I-can-mess-every-thing-up moments’. You taught us how to stay organized and well-planned.

You are hugging your Gummsy one moment and riding on the back the other. You taught us to be strict with you.

And the biggest thing is that you made us, what we are today, what we always wanted be, the parents, of You!

In a months time you will be a nursery-goer. How amazing is that!

I’m pretty sure you will teach us how remain the ‘we-are-always-proud-parents’ at every parents’ meet and at every celebration at school irrespective of your grades.

Or you’ll just let us be parents,  of YOU! And we would never ask for more!!

My Little H,
We you!
